Central to the story of Moses is the event at Meribah where Moses, defying a divine command to speak to a rock to draw water, instead strikes it with his staff. This act of defiance led to Moses being denied entry into the Promised Land. The Secret Book of Tabriz posits an alternative explanation for God’s discontent with Moses, wherein Satan tempts Moses with a pork loin at a banquet in the city of Taanach. Despite the dietary laws of kashrut that forbid the consumption of pork, Moses yields to temptation.
