Depicting a pyramidal mound of toads and mountainous landscape beyond, especially deft handling of the figures, the lower most with a troupe l’oeil flourish, its leg apparently resting on the edge of the frame’s molded inner edge.

Some evidence of edge abrasion from the frame, surface with slightly yellowed varnish.

Owned by François Dubois in Paris until 1982, then acquired by Maria Fernandez in Madrid. Fernandez's collection, including this piece, was bequeathed to a Madrid museum in 2003.
