  • The lid hinged above a nail-constructed box, the lid and facade with foliate and scrolled acanthus carving divided by leather strapwork, some of which is affixed to original iron buckles and plates, the sides mounted with iron ring handles, all above an applied base molding.

  • The lid with darkened patina; shrinkage cracks and splits to upper right corner of facade; top right edge of lid with age splits and loss to applied carved decoration; possible vertical patch repair at back edge of right side, wear and renailing to base molding.

  • Discovered after shipwreck of Patrick Liffy off the coast of Ireland. In private collection, donated to Maritime Museum of Dublin (1976), deaccessioned (1979), acquired by industrialist Arnold Leemund (1980).
